Guest Speaker: Dr. Elvan Gunel

Yesterday, Dr. Elvan Gunel, a social studies professor from Turkey, spoke with the Global Cultures classes.  Elvan talked about diversity among Muslim women,  her experiences here in the US, a bit about her country, and some about the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians.  So, what is something that surprised you during her presentation? What did you learn that you didn't know before?

  1. Well, I didn't know that the muslim girls wore jeans and such under their clothes. I always thought that they just wore like a shirt and really nice dresspants. And she kinda also proved most of the stereotypes ive heard about muslim people.

  2. I didnt realize that she drank alcahol, i found that suprising. She looked "normal" and i expected she would be wearing a hijab. She was really nice and really cool. Grant

  3. Yeah. I thought that all Muslim women had to be fully covered. But then I found out it was all how you interpreted Islam.

  4. Well i agree with Grant i thought they weren't allowed to drink Alchoal. And she was "Normal" looking at least by our standerds. The accent was the only thing that people would think she not American.

  6. When i first heard that we were going to have a guest speaker who was muslim, I thought that she would be covered and would have a head scarf on. I was surprised when I came into the class room and saw that she had a nice causal shirt on and jeans. Later on I found out that she doesn't wear a head scarf and doesn't cover herself like some other people do. It was a really cool and fun experience to have someone who was muslim and from Turkey to come and talk to us :) Taylor

  7. I didn't know it was a choice wheather you went to a Mosque. I thought you had to go. I thought she would be very cautious, but she was very open. She seemed like all of us. I really enjoyed her.

  8. I didn't know that turkey was a lot like America. In turkey they have a democracy not religious based laws. Turkey has shopping places and restaurants just like us, and they wear similar clothes. I didn't know anything about turkey before the guest speaker came so it was nice to learn more about it. 10. Tottaly agree w/u guys. I was also suprised that Turks had the Qur'an in a different language, cause i had thought they had to keep it the same. I also like how she was tottaly cool with the steryotypes we had, and she wasn't like, "well that's stupid!" she was cool. Madison XD

  11. I was really shocked on how similiar Turkey was to the United States and how it wasn't as difficult for her to come here, then it was for Senora Luna to travel here from Mexico.

  15. I thought it was interesting that she wasn't really strict at all about her religion.

  16. I was surprised that in some countries in the Middle East, their law was the Qur'an. That's so different from America. That would be like having the Bible or Torah as the law. I thought that was interesting.

  18. I didn't know that some places have laws based on the Qu'ran, and that all women there, Muslim or otherwise, have to cover their head... :(

  19. I really enjoyed having her come and visit. I was expecting a "traditional" Muslim woman and was totally surprised by how she looked. I also thought that you had to go to a Mosque and was surprised to learn that you didn't.

  21. I learned that there are religious laws in some countries. I thought it was also innteresting how in Iran, women were fighting for their rights.

  22. I never knew that the Qur'an could actually be the law in some "Middle Eastern" countries. that's kind of sad, and it takes away some freedoms of people who are not musslim. I am glad we don't do that here. Things would be a WHOLE lot different.

  23. Inwas really surprised that it is The Law in some places that women must cover themselves. I also didn't know that some countries based their law off a religius book.

  24. I was very suprised to see that her friend was drinking alchol. I had no clue that in some countries u must follow the laws from the qur'an. Other than that i really enjoyed having her with us that day!!!! :) Hanan

  25. I agree with Katya on women fighting for their rights. I knew that Musslim Women were sort of,"in the back round" But i didn't know how much they DIDN'T have. It's so cool that they are standing up for themselves. go girls!

  26. I thought it was really cool to have a Muslim come in to talk to us about her culture. It was really interesting how what he heard in the videos and in class about Muslims was different to what she said, i.e., when we learned that the Qur'an shouldn't be translated, she said that wasn't true. I found that fascinating that our sources said that but when we asked her she said it did not matter.

  27. i thought all of the girls there had to wear that scarf thing on there heads. and she didn't wear that scarf thing.

  28. I did not know that they were not allowed to drink alcohol. I was surprised that they had the option of covering themselves in some countries and that how we dress was counted as "covering ourselves".

  29. I thought it was great that she came! What I learned was that you can't tell what religion a person is in if you look at them.
I also liked how she proved a lot of things like streotypes and videos wrong about Muslims.
I guess it shows you have to live it to know it....

  33. She was a great woman! The fact she was Turkish suprised me, because whenever I saw the country "Turkey" on a map I always though of the food and I never really put great thought about actual normal people live there. Also that she is Muslim, because usually I don't get why, but alot of people could tell when someone was Muslim, but she looked like a normal anyone you would see :D!

  34. That was a good point Alexa!

it was a cool experience. I really like having people come to talk about what they do or how they live instead of going by text books.

  35. I thought she would come in with the head scarf on. I didn't know that how you follow Islam depends on the individual. I thought it was interesting that she didn't come in as, what I thought was, a typical Muslim women. I was really glad I got to learn that Islam has a lot of freedom.

  37. I think we should things like this(guest speakers) for the other religions we study. I think that would be nice to see it first hand like we've all been saying.

  38. It would be spectacular to hear from people who are different than us.
Just as long as I can understand what he's saying. ;)

  41. Yeah I agree with Sam! We had one point of view I think it might help if we got a different view on the religion. It was still interesting to learn though because she seemed so normal, and i hate to be styreo-typical, but so American. She wore normal clothes and not the hajib or the dress thing, so it shocked me when she said she was Muslim and from Turkey

  42. I was surprised that she said she drank alchol. I found that shocking. And i thought that she would be wearing the traditional oufit. She looked perfectly normal to me. I really liked her accent.
