What is Islam?

In Global Cultures, we have just started a study of Islam. It's important for us to have a good understanding of basic Islamic practices, which will help us as we examine world cultures. Knowing something about Islam will also add richness to discussions that will happen during the upcoming Middle East Summit.

So...my question to you: To help us in our class study, what question do you have about Islam that we haven't covered yet?

  1. I know women wear head scarfs to hide their hair from men and strangers, but why do they not want them to see their hair?

  5. I agree with Tara. I think it would be really fun and cool to see what the Qur'an says. And also if women cover their hair in front of men and strangers, is their hair important in some way? Taylor

  7. I went to the Noor Muslim center with my church. He said that the Muslims don't beleive that the Hijjab is a restaint but freedom. Some wear them just because they want people to know them for who they are, not for what clothes their wearing and what their hair looks like. Caroline Smyth

  11. I think it is because they thought pigs were not pure, and unclean, so they did not want to eat them. Some Jewish and Christian people don't either.

  12. hey Taylor,
to answer your question w/ the hair, it's because they think that if they don't, men will be "distracted" by them and won't focus on Islam. Does that help?

  15. I tink that visting a mosque could be a good idea. it could help us learn more about the religion first hand, instead of videos and books.

  21. I never really knew very much about Islam before we started this unit. I was really stereo typical and i didn't even know it! I always assumed that all muslims looked alike and they wore the hajibs and spoke weird and always worshipped Allah. But now i know better.
