"Flip Flotsam" and Globalization

In Global Cultures class, we have begun talking about the idea of "globalization". To help us understand what globalization means, we viewed the Kenyan documentary "Flip Flotsam"  in class on Thursday. Knowing that globalization's definition includes the consequences of being interconnected, consider the film.  Write a comment to this blog post:  1) What did  you think about "Flip Flotsam"?  2) Give at least one example of a consequence of the flip-flop industry in Kenya.  (Feel free to read your peers' responses and comment if you like!) Be sure to include your name in your comment.

  1. It was interesting to see how the flip flops was used in different ways in all of the places where they ended up. A bad consequence of the flip flop industry was that the flip flops ended up trashing beaches along with lots more "trash". It is great that people have found ways to reuse the flip flops other pieces of trash washed up on shore. My favorite part of the film was watching sea life put the flip flops to good use.

  2. I loved the video esp. how the sea creatures took advantage of the stray flip flops. One of the consequences that I first thought of was that sea life might think it is food. There could be a big decrease in animals because of the polution.

  3. I loved "Flip Flotsam"! It was a really creative and interesting film. I really like how they showed the animals using the flip flops. One consequence of the flip-flop industry in Kenya is more available jobs. Since there is such a high demand for flip-flops and most everyone wears them that makes more jobs for people.

  4. 1) I thought the movie was great and it is kind of inforcing recycling and to do good things for the invironment.
    2) I think the industrie could go bad by possibly enforcing child labor because I do not know the laws of Kenya so anything could happen.

  5. I thought the movie was really good. It really described what we were talking about the past couple of days. I think one of the consiquences of the flip-flop industry is that the trash goes out to sea ad animals can choke on those and die.

  6. I was very surprised about the cycle the flip flops went through starting with being made, then being sold, then gotten rid of and eventually get to the ocean, and eventually floating to an island where they are made into crafts that are sold where the flip flops were first made. A consequence of this is that there will be more litter in the ocean that could kill animals.

  7. 1) I thought it was cool with like how the peoples made toys for lil kids outta recycled flip flops found after the tide on the beach. It was interesting how flip flops start in on place then go to another and then another and then end back up at the starting point. 2) One consequence of the flip flop industry is that like when it rains and there are flip flops out side they get cought in the drain things that lead out into the ocean and then when they are in the ocean there is a possible chance that a whale or like some fish came up and ate it (the flip flop) then like the fish or whale or whatever dies or it injures it. In other words the flip flops could affect marine life.

  8. i liked the video because i thought it was interesting how they folowed a flip-flop and showed how one little thing can have a big consequence on the earth, such as when they showed the flip-flop being made and then its journey across the ocean, then to be made into a toy fish and sold at the same place it started from.

  9. I liked the video,i thought that making beyond repairable flip flops into animals was a very creative idea!! I thought it was very interesting to watch. 1 consequence about the flip flop industry in Kenya is that they will eventually run out of resources to make the flip flops.

  10. I like Flip Flotsam. One example of a consequence of the flip-flop industry in Kenya is that some of the flip-flops stay in the ocean instead of going on the island.

  11. i thought the video was really cool. and i thought that the people that made the flip flops onto toys were really smart and they should expand to other places for more money. also i thought that it was cool how the flip flop saved that crap and gave the barnacles food. which then gave the other crabs food.

  12. I thought the film helped me have a better fell for what globalization is. A conseuence of flip flops are they end up in the ocean as ploution.

  13. I loved "Flip Flotsam"! It was a really creative and interesting film. I also thought it was adorable when they showed the crabs and sea life's use for the flip-flops. One example of a consequence of the flip-flop industry in Kenya is more jobs. Since so many people use flip-flops, there has to be someone to make all of them, sell them, and transport them. That makes for a lot of job opportunities in the flip-flop industry.

  14. I thought that "flip flotsam" was a very interesting film. I was amaised to see the journy of the flip flop form Kenya, and all the way back again. It was deffinently a great example of globalization. I think that one consequence would be that some of the towns-women were able to make a little bit of money from what others might just call trash.

  15. I liked it. It was interesting. It was cool to see where all the flip flops go. I especially liked the part when the one red flip flop was heading down a stream into the ocean. A consequence of the industry is pollution. Just saying, i hate pollution!!!!!!!

  16. I enjoyed watching "Flip Flotsam". It was interesting to see trash being turned into eco-friendly art. I wonder how they came up with such a creative idea? This is definitely a positive consequence of the flip-flop industry in Kenya, because it provides people in both Mombasa and Kiwayu with a good way to make money.

  17. I thought it was ironic how the flip-flops were made in Kenya then drifted to the island which was then taken back to where they were made and sold again as toys. The consequences of the flip-flop industry in Kenya is the pollution from the factory who makes flip-flops.

  18. I think that Flip Flotsam was a great way to show a flip flops journey over a short period of time. While it could be looked at, as something that is dangerous to some of the sea life, it is also a good, and helpful thing to them, like when the crab used it to sit on.

  19. I thought flip flotsam so so cool! the story was interesting you defiantly should keep playing it.One consequences would be the flip flops that don't end up on the beach to be remade get stuck in the ocean and animals eat them or get stuck in them.

  20. I thought that the film was very interesting. I really liked the whole idea of recycling, and I liked how the story was told by following different things. A consequence of all of the flip-flops being produced is all of the waste, and how animals are being changed, and how all of these flip-flops end up being tossed into a beach somewhere, when they could have been recycled, or not make as much.

  21. I really liked the film and thought it was a great way to learn about globalization. One consequence would be that there's so much trash on the beaches in Kenya. I liked how those women in the village turned trash on the beach into brand new toys and decorations to be sold.

  22. I thought Flip Flotsam was really intresting, all of the wildlife was really cool and now I want one of the things made from flip flops! One conseequence of the flip flop industry is that the flip flops get created into fun toys and decorations giving another source of income to the people that make them.

    2) All that litter on the beaches! Anyone ever heard of global warming (don't even go there katie!)

  25. I think that flip flotsam was very interesting. I like how they informed us about littering in a way that showed us how recycling can help us and our planet. A consiquence of this industry is that there was a lot of litter from the flip flops in the ocean and on the shore.

    ~Jeanette Gardner

  26. Flip Flotsam was a really interesting video because you could see every step along the way from footwear to decorations. A consequence of the flip flop industry in Kenya is the people on the small island where they wash up can make and sell figures made of the foam in the discarded flip flops, recycling the material.

  27. I thought it was terrible for the enviornment with the flipflops but the way that that island transfered them into toys was pretty cool. As i was saying the flip flop industry in Kenya can be polluting the enviornment with their flip flops.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i thought it was a really interesting story. It showed globalization around the world in ways that i had never thought about before. one consequence of the flip-flop industry is pollution. not all the flip flops make it to the shore line of the island in kenya and not ll the flotsam was gathered to make the toys. some of the flip flops will be out in the ocean polluting the water.

  29. I thought "Flip Flotsam" was really cool because it showed how one group of people got good use out of the shoes, then how they helped another group of people and were turned into something useful. I liked how they followed the flip-flop on its "journey" across the ocean. One consequence of the flip-flop industry in Kenya is that the flip-flops might not always end up on the island they have where they were put to use, they could just end up polluting the ocean or not have a good purpose wherever they end up.

  30. 1. I thought the vidoe was cute and very entertaining, while displaying information in a easy to understand way. 2. The impact of these flip flops does harm to the ocean but also helps the ecosystem. Like providing a place for sea animals to rest. It also provides plenty of jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  31. i think it is the best way to get rid of waste that washes up on the shore and is put to very good use in all the ways they are put to use. A consequence is the flip flops that dont wash up on the shore are out at sea being trash.

  32. I thought the documentary Flip Flotsam was cool to watch. It described ocean pollution's journey into a way to help sea creatures, then earn money later for the people that lived on the island.
Flip flops are a great business for people in Kenya. It's a great way for them to earn money because everyone there wears flip-flops.

  33. i thought that this was a really neat way to recycle :) the crab was so cute but i think that it would be a consequence because it could change the sea life, and they might think it was food that would be bad.

  34. i thought it wascool that they made the flip flop art from old flip flops. Its cool that the flip flops don't go to waste and they are recycled.

  35. I thought it was interesting to see that the women on the island did create something new, out of the trash they found on their beach. I also thought it was interesting that that the toys came back to the part of Kenya where they were made. It affects Kenya because it circulates they money in the participating parts of Kenya, and gives the women on this island money that they would not otherwise have.

  36. I loved the documentary "Flip Flotsam". It really showed the postive and negative consequences of globalization. One negative consequence of the flip flop industry in Kenya is that there is a fast-growing polution of flip-flops in the ocean due the the increasing production of flip-flops.

  37. I thought that Fliop Flotsam was a goo dway to sho whow globelization is spreadin today and how one little thing can makes its way from one place to another. A consequence would be that this is addin gto the polution in the world.

  38. I thought 'Flip Flotsam' was a really cool documentary, especially how the flip-flops could be recycled and made into something else that could be sold on the market, even thought most people would think when it was old and used, you couldn't reuse it. The business is really good for the people in Kenya, but I think one conesequence from it would be that when the flip-flops don't always end up on the island for people to carve into animals and shapes, it could pollute the oceans and hurt animals and/or life around it.

  40. I thought that the film 'flip flotsam' was fun to watch, and would be a great source of enviornmental awareness for many. I think the main way that the flip-flop industy has affected the enviornment has been the fact that they are washed to sea, and that many are never recovered, and float as sea litter.

  41. In the documentary it showed literaly how one mans trash can be anothers treasure. The island with the flip flop problem should be more concious about their severe output of litter. It is changing natural habitats although it may be in a good way.

  43. i thought the video was really neat. "the cycle of a flip flotsam". i think this video showed true globalization. a good consequence instead would be something to agree on in a sea of differences. you could put together an israelite and a palestinian *:)* and they could probably agree that this concept is cool. I hope our parents could see this video and tell us how their defination of globalization changed

  44. 1) i thought it was a nice interesting documentary because it showed like how a flip flop goes like one place to another and then back to the place it started being sold as a toy

  46. i think that flip flopsim is a good movie about how we can reuse stuff like flip flops for other things such as toys but one disadvantage is that the flip flops that dont make it to the island are just going to float in the ocean where it may harm animals and puloute the water

  61. So far, I think that "Flip Flotsam" was the best film we've watched this year. I think the flim was very interesting with the "cycle of life" for the flip flops. It was also interesting with the birds using the flip flops as a place to rest without being poked by tough rocks and the women using flip flop scraps to make toys. It's also very smart to reuse them; save the enviroment and save your money! With all the good that happens to the flip flops, there will be bad. Not all of the flip flops get picked up and reused, which means polution. And with all the flip flops that do get reused, the flip flop industry won't be able to make more flip flops and they will have to close down.

I wouldn't want to know that barnacles and other sea 'flotsam' was on my toy if I got one. Something bad is that lots of those flip flops don't mae it to that one little island. That would make a lot of polution.

I love the little crap getting on the flip flop for a ride. it was so adorable. I thought the animals would think its food and some animals would die.:( But i underestimated how smart the animals actually are. I loved the video. ( secreatly i would love to live there.
