Cultural Universal: Holidays

So...this week, people in the United States celebrate "Thanksgiving".  There are many cultural components of this holiday relating to history, family, food, travel, traditions, entertainment, shopping... even sports.  Think about ways your family will commemorate this American holiday. Describe at least one tradition / activity that you will participate in during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday (and the weekend after). (Note: Please don't make your comment just about eating turkey, unless there is more to say about that than "We eat turkey." Think a little harder!:-D)  Please remember to sign your name to your comment.

  5. For me, Thanksgiving is a great time to be with family. We usually all get together and eat a huge meal.(my favorite is the pie my grandma makes!)Before the meal my sister and I usually come up with some way to know and find out what the people in our family are thankful for. One year they all had to write what they are thankful for down on a piece of paper, and put it in a basket. Then during the meal we read them out loud. Last year everyone made acrosstic poems; each letter of their name being another thing they're thankful for. Tara

  7. The day after Thanksgiving we usually set up our Christmas Tree! It's kind of funny that as soon as we finish one holiday we're already anxious for the next! I guess it's good we have something to look forward to.

  10. We have a couple at my house.
First, every single year we have it at my house with my mom's side of the family. My uncle Jim always has a football game on, and most of the "dudes" are watching. The rest of us, which is usually my mom, dad, my aunt Marie, My cousin tyler and I play Eucher and Lake Nancy Rummy(we like card games). My favorite tradition, though, is something tottaly weird. My Gandparents are always late to EVERY family gathering, so we have an anuall bet to see when they will get here.

On thursday we have a tiny thanksgiving lunch then go bowling. For dinner we have a go out to the blue goose and have dinner. On Friday we play football and then have pizzan for dinner. On sat we just hang out and then the adults have a wine tasting. WE have the best thanksgiving traditions ever. And my grandma makes the best Rolls EVER. Even though they come froma package. 13. I as an individual consider thanksgiving a time for reflecting, counting your blessings, and becoming closer with family. I do not beleive that Thanksgiving nessisarily has to tie to the pilgrims in America. i say this because I find it a horrible shame that the Native American race has decreased so much and we have lost many great traditions and knowledge, partly because of the first Caucasian people that settled there...

  20. Oh I asked my mom if we are going to have turkey and she said that we are not. She said that chinese people do not like turkey and so they buy "chinese turkey". (I think she said it was like duck legs or something?)

I didn't know that but I was wondering why our "turkey" always looked different...

  22. The only thing special on Thanksgiving to me is my family, and I think that should be a strong tradition in some of your holidays(and for those who don't celebrate the holidays). For the best tradition is family, even when they get on your nerves, push your buttons, or when they humiliate you in front of your friends.

Family is always there for you, even when your an adult or senior. They're there for you when your in a hospital; when your on trail for a crime; when your in a retirement home; when you were born; when you graduate college; when you get married; when it's your last day of your life. They know you'll do the same thing for them, and you do, too.

  28. Well, I kind of started a new tradition this year. At least I want it to be a tradition. And that is Oreo Cheesecake Truffles. They're the best dessert in the world. But the desserts we eat every year are Rumballs, Pumpkin Pie, and Pecan Pie. All three are guaramteed.

  29. Christmas is said to be the celebration of Jesus's birth(whitch is wrong). This is for Christians(and I don't know if other religions take part in it).

Hanukkah is a celebration that lasts for 8 days, it celebrates the story of traveling Jews that had less oil for a candle. But to there suprise the flame lasted for 8 days.

But I'm not a Jew, so correct this if I'm wrong.

  32. For thanksgiving normally we go down to my grandma's and have a big reunion with my cousins and the rest of my stepdad's side of the family but since my grandma died this tuesday, we had a small get together with a third of the large group that normally comes but it was still fun.
